Applying to Art School – How Smart Families Turn Applications Into Scholarships
Most families assume that applying to art school works like any other college: you submit your grades, write an essay, pay an application fee, and wait. But parents of students who get into top-tier art and design programs and secure significant scholarship offers quickly learn that there is an art college admission process that is different.
What sets those successful applications apart isn’t just talent or effort. It’s strategy.
Applying to Art School – The Costs
Applying to art school doesn’t have to be expensive. In fact, the actual costs application fees, digital submissions, and optional travel are often less than what families expect. What makes the biggest difference isn’t how much you spend, but how and when you spend it.
The traditional path many families follow is relatively straightforward. Students submit the work they’ve made in class, camps or through personal projects, attach a transcript and essay, and apply to several programs. This may cost a few hundred dollars in total. It’s simple, but risky. Without expert guidance, students often submit portfolios that are too general, unfocused, or uneven in quality.
They may include work that doesn’t align with what art colleges actually want to see. In many cases, these students are talented but their materials don’t clearly communicate that. As a result, they may be rejected outright or receive little to no scholarship support.

The Strategic Approach to Applying to Art School
Now compare that to a more strategic approach one that starts earlier and includes targeted support. Families on this path often begin by having their teen’s work assessed by a professional who understands the admissions landscape. Instead of guessing what to improve, students receive clear, personalized feedback.
From there, they build new work designed to strengthen weaknesses, showcase growth, and align with what top schools value most. Their portfolios are not just stronger, they tell a story that stands out. Students who take this route often invest in personal, tailored projects that align with their area of interest and see the value of portfolio preparation services. These programs guide students in developing high-quality work that speaks directly to admissions reviewers.
In many cases, these families also pursue coaching to help their teen communicate clearly and confidently during interviews and portfolio reviews. The upfront cost is higher than the traditional path, but the payoff is significant.
The Path to Scholarship Awards
Consider two students applying to the same art colleges. The Student A submits work created over the past few years in general art classes, pays a few submission fees, and sends off their applications. Student A spent around $200 to $400. Student B works with a coach to create focused, powerful art project in their area of interest, invests in materials that elevate the quality of their work, and practices presenting their portfolio.
Student B’s family may spend closer to $2000-4000 in total. So, yes, ten times as much, in the short term.
Student B is more likely to receive multiple offers and those offers often come with generous merit scholarships. Let’s say Student B applies to schools like Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design (RMCAD) or ArtCenter, gets admitted to both and receives a $25,000 scholarship from RMCAD and an $80,000 scholarship from Art Cetner.
The small investment made early in the process can lead to tens of thousands of dollars in savings, not to mention greater confidence and clarity throughout the application journey. Investing early in programs that have a proven track record yielded Student B and their family a twenty times return on that $2000-4000 investment and the peace-of-mind that comes with scholarship awards. This has been my experience.
Confidently Applying to Art School
This isn’t just about money. Students who take the strategic path feel more confident in their work. They understand what they’re submitting, why it matters, and how to talk about it. They’re not sending in a portfolio and crossing their fingers. They’re making a case and it shows.
Art school admissions is a process with high stakes. For many teens, it’s their first time sharing their work publicly or advocating for themselves in a serious way. It’s hard and it takes time to improve. The clearer and more intentional that process is, the better they tend to do not just in admissions, but in scholarships, interviews, and future creative work.
Parents often want to do the right thing but feel overwhelmed. They may not know where to start or what to prioritize. And without a roadmap, it’s easy to spend time and money in the wrong places, on camps or programs that don’t align with what admissions teams actually want to see. The good news is that the path doesn’t have to be complicated.
Applying to Art School the Smart Way
With a bit of guidance early on, families can help their teen submit an application that is not only strong but truly competitive.
If your child is serious about pursuing art or design, and if you want to make the most of both their time and your budget, consider investing in the front end of the process. An artwork assessment, tailored art college project guidance, and portfolio prep support can help your teen submit work that’s not only good but good in the ways that matter most to art schools.
Applying to art school isn’t just about getting in. It’s about setting your teen up to thrive — creatively, academically, and financially. With a bit of strategy and support, it’s possible to transform the application process from something uncertain and stressful into something empowering and rewarding.
